Common tales & myths

If I eat carrots every day I will never have eyesight problems?

Nutrition is very important in maintaining the health of your eyes; in particular, vitamins A, D and E as well as anti-oxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin. Carrots are a great source of vitamin A and will definitely help in keeping your eyes healthy, however carrots are not guaranteed to prevent eyesight problems. On the other hand, have you ever seen a rabbit with glasses?

I only need to get my eyesight tested just before my driving test?

Of course you should get your eyes tested before your driving test, however regular eye examinations prior to this will reassure you that your vision is good and your eyes are healthy for all the activities that you do as part of daily living. For example did you know that if you have a colour deficiency there are certain jobs that you cannot do?

“Colour deficiency with your eyes will not be a good defence if you are caught jumping red lights!”

If I wear glasses it will make my eyesight worse?

Not at all! If you don’t wear the glasses you need, you may end up straining your eyes. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that as we get older our ability to see up close deteriorates. Glasses enhance your vision and will need to be upgraded as time goes by.
